Mac Pro Review

Apple’s Mac Pro was originally released on August 7, 2006. Since that time, it has been the workstation workhorse of the Macintosh line. It’s the fastest computer manufactured by the company. This model is powered by Intel, offers a Xeon microprocessor and has room for up to four internal hard drives. Since the Mac Pro’s debut, there have been two new versions. The first was released in early 2008 and the latest in early 2009.

The original Mac Pro offered an Intel 5000x chipset, NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT graphics with 256MB of GDDR3 SDRAM, a 250GB Serial ATA hard drive with a 8MB cache and two 2.66GHz Dual-core Intel Xeon Woodcrest processors. The front side bus had 1333MHz of power and the optical drive was a 16x SuperDrive with double-layer support and 1GB of memory. These features made the Mac Pro a highly desirable desktop—fast, versatile, vivid and expansive.  The specifications on the two later versions have been upgraded considerably. These models utilize either one or two Xeon 5500 Nehalem 64-bit processors. The processor cores total either four or eight. The latest version contains either one 2.66GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon 3500 processor or two 2.26GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon 5500 with 8MB of L3 cache, making it extremely fast. Upgrades offering even more power are available.

The hard drive is a 640GB Serial ATA with a 16MB cache. The hard drives run at either 7200-rpm or 15,000-rpm. Each hard drive has its own SATA-300 port. They are mounted on sleds or trays and are connected to the computer by simply pushing them into place. There are two optical drives. This hard drive feature helps ensure that the Mac Pro offers users expansive opportunities that can be easily exploited.

The Mac Pro is now offered with 3GB or 6GB of memory. Its memory is expandable to anywhere from 8GB to 32GB. The 8-core models offer 32GB capacity. The Intel QuickPath Interconnect has replaced the front side bus, which was formerly 1333MHz in the original model and 1600MHz in the 2008 version. The QuickPath has helped make this Apple a top-performing, cutting edge desktop.

The graphics, which can incorporate up to four cards, are some of the best around. The standard model, which utilizes the NVIDIA a GeForce GT 120 with 512 MB, is vivid and rich. Users may opt to purchase the Mac Pro with the upgrade—ATI Radeon HD 4870 with 512 MB. This system presents some of the deepest, detailed images imaginable. The Mac Pro is the only Macintosh in which the user may change graphics cards.

The Mac Pro is noted for outperforming all other Apple computers. It is faster and more versatile than any other Mac around. The Mac Pro is also the most expensive of all Macs. But most agree that in terms of performance, graphics and cutting edge capabilities, it is certainly worth the money and used Mac Pro may be a great way for you to harness the power of this elite mac unit. The great thing about the Mac Pro is you know that as long as consumers desire and need high end, top-performing desktops this computer in some version or another will always be around.
